Last Englishmen, editura Chatto & Windus: John Auden and Michael Spender were mountain researchers who vied for inclusion on an expedition that would put Englishmen on top of Everest for the first time, and also love rivals with painter Nancy Sharp at the centre, with both of them also having literary brothers in WH Auden and Stephen Spender. The tangled webs these two weave are taken as a way in to an analysis of the end-of-empire 1930s mood.
